We have a display of old typewriters in the Visitor Centre. These are quite fragile, so we discourage visitors from touching these. However, kids love to try these out, so we bought a few not-so-fragile, more modern typewriters (from the seventies, so getting on a bit as well!) so that visitors and kids can try them out. Currently they are not displayed very well and inaccessible for the smaller children, so we came up with the idea of putting four identical old-style wooden school desks and chairs together in a block and to put the typewriters on, so kids can sit and do some ‘proper’ typing. It is quite amazing to see them come to the realisation that these are the predecessors of their iPads and wireless printers! These desks can be found on Ebay for about £80 including the chairs, so we are looking for about £400.
